5 Common Window Problems and their Affordable Solutions - A Guide for Homeowners

Windows are a crucial part of our homes and buildings. They bring in natural light, provide fresh air, and keep us comfortable by keeping the heat in. But, like all things, windows can have problems that can affect their look, functionality, and energy efficiency. In this article, we'll talk about some of the most common window problems and what you can do to fix them.

Drafty Windows

    • If you're feeling a chill near your windows, it might be because they're drafty. This happens when there are gaps around the frame or between the window and the wall. Here are a few ways to fix it:
    • Caulk: If you notice any gaps around the window frame, use caulk or silicone sealant to fill them up. This will keep the cold air outside and make your home feel cozy.
    • Weatherstripping: If you have gaps between the window and the wall, weatherstripping is your friend. It's a flexible material that you can put around the window's perimeter to create a tight seal and keep the cold air out. Take a look at our Weatherstripping!
    • Window Insulation Film: Another solution for drafty windows is window insulation film. This film goes on the inside of the window and helps to reduce air flow and keep your home warm.

    Stuck Windows

      • Stuck windows can be a hassle and prevent you from getting fresh air. This can happen because of paint buildup, warped frames, or misaligned tracks. Here's what you can do:
      • Cleaning: If paint is causing your window to stick, use a putty knife or scraper to clean the frame and track. This will remove the paint and make it easier for the window to move.
      • Sanding: If the frame is warped, sand down the area that's causing the problem. This will help the window move more freely.
      • Lubricating: If the track is misaligned, try lubricating it with silicone spray or WD-40. This will reduce friction and make it easier to open and close your window. We also make our own lubricating spray specifically for windows called 2Slick!

      Broken Window Panes

      • A broken window pane can be dangerous and impact the look of your windows. To fix this, you'll need to replace the broken pane with a new one. You can hire a professional window repair company or, if you're handy, you can do it yourself.

        Foggy Windows

          • Foggy windows can be a sign of a leak in the window's seal, which can let in moisture and cause condensation. Here's what you can do:
          • Re-caulking: If the seal around your window is leaky, re-caulk it to keep moisture out.
          • Replacing the Window: If the problem is more serious, you may need to replace the whole window. This will ensure a proper seal and keep condensation at bay.

          Broken Window Hardware

            • Broken window hardware, like locks or handles, can make it difficult to open and close your windows. Here's what you can do:
            • Replacing the Hardware: If your lock or handle is broken, replace it with a new one. This is a simple and affordable solution that will get your window working again. Find Replacement Locks Here
            • Repairing the Hardware: If the hardware isn't completely broken, but not working properly, try to repair it. This may involve tightening screws or replacing parts.
