How to Determine the Length of a Window Balance from Sash Height

In this post, we discuss how to measure your sash to determine the length of your window balance. Normally, you would use the old window balance to determine the length of your replacement balance. But what if you no longer have the original balance? The process is very simple and requires no tools other than a tape measure! Continue reading to learn how.

Spiral Window Balances

To determine the length of your spiral window balance without the balance in your hand is very simple and can be done with nothing more than a tape measure.

First, you are going to want to raise your sash so the whole thing is visible. Then you are simply going to measure the entire sash from top to bottom.

That's it! Now you can select the proper replacement spiral window balance.

Block and Tackle Window Balances

For block and tackle window balances, the process is a bit different but still just as simple.

In this case, you would simply measure the height of the visible glass only. Do not include the rails on the top and bottom in your measurement.

And that's it! Now you can select the correct replacement block and tackle window balances.
