How To Remove Coil Spring Window Balances: Step by Step Guide

Removing coil spring balances (also known as constant force balances) from windows involves a few careful steps. These balances are often found in newer vinyl or aluminum double-hung windows. Here’s how to remove them safely.

Tools You May Need:

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Utility knife (optional)

  • Gloves and safety glasses

Step-by-Step Instructions

Unlock and Open the Sash:

  • Raise the bottom sash a few inches to relieve tension in the spring of the balance.

Tilt the Sash Inward:

  • Release the tilt latches on top of the sash and tilt it toward you until it's horizontal.

Remove the Sash:

Hold the Balance Shoe in Place:

  • The coil spring connects to a shoe that slides in a vertical track. These shoes can be under tension, so use a flathead screwdriver to hold it in place.

Disengage the Coil Spring Balance:

  • Use the screwdriver to rotate the balance shoe cam (a small metal piece inside the shoe) to unlock it. Then slide it up or down as needed.

Unscrew the Coil Housing (if needed):

  • The coil is usually housed in a metal or plastic casing secured by one or two screws. Remove the screws to take out the entire coil mechanism.

Remove the Coil(s):

  • Depending on the model, there may be 1–3 coil springs stacked together. Carefully pull them out once the housing is removed.
