The 77 Series Single Coil Spring Balance helps support the window sash so it can raise, lower, and stay in position properly.

This guide walks through the basic assembly and installation process for the single coil spring, pivot lock shoe, and balance cover.

Safety Note: Coil balances are spring-loaded. Keep a firm grip on the shoe when tensioning the balance, and do not release the shoe until it is locked in place.

You will need:

• 77 Series single coil spring balance
• Compatible pivot lock shoe
• Compatible balance cover
• Flathead screwdriver
• Phillips screwdriver or drill
• Mounting screw
• Safety glasses

Step 1: Attach the Coil Spring to the Pivot Shoe

Insert the end of the coil spring into the slot on the pivot lock shoe. The spring should seat securely into the shoe before you rotate it into position.

Match the orientation of the original balance assembly when possible. Depending on the window design, the spring may be used on the right or left side of the sash.

Step 2: Rotate the Coil Spring Into Place

Once the spring end is seated in the shoe, rotate the coil spring so it locks into the pivot shoe.

The spring should sit flat and remain connected without slipping out. Do not force the spring if it does not line up correctly. Remove it and check the orientation before trying again.

Step 3: Install the Balance Cover

Place the balance cover over the coil spring. The cover helps hold the spring in place and keeps the assembly organized inside the jamb channel.

Make sure the cover is positioned so the mounting hole lines up correctly and the coil spring sits inside the cover without binding.

Step 4: Check the Completed Assembly

Before installing the balance into the window jamb, confirm that the pivot shoe, spring, and cover are connected properly.

The assembly should feel secure, and the shoe should move without the spring coming loose.

Step 5: Slide the Assembly Into the Jamb Channel

Slide the completed balance assembly into the window jamb channel. The pivot shoe should enter the channel first and move freely inside the track.

Let the shoe move down toward the lower part of the jamb before fastening the cover.

Step 6: Fasten the Balance Cover

Position the balance cover at the correct height in the jamb and secure it using the mounting screw. If possible, reinstall the balance where the original screw hole was located.

Do not overtighten the screw. The cover should be secure, but overtightening may damage the cover or affect how the balance sits in the jamb.

Step 7: Lock the Pivot Shoe

Insert a flathead screwdriver into the metal cam of the pivot shoe. Carefully pull the shoe downward approximately 6 to 8 inches.

While holding the shoe in position, turn the cam to lock the shoe in place. Do not release the screwdriver until the shoe is locked.

Repeat the process on the opposite side of the window if replacing both balances.

Step 8: Reinstall the Window Sash

Once both pivot shoes are locked at the proper height, reinstall the sash by placing the sash pivot bars into the pivot shoes.

After the pivot bars are seated, tilt the sash back into the frame and test the window operation. Make sure the sash is level before snapping it back into place.

Step 9: Test the Window

Raise and lower the sash several times to confirm smooth operation. The sash should move evenly and stay in position when released.

If the sash feels uneven, drops, binds, or does not tilt in properly, stop and recheck the balance orientation, shoe position, and pivot bar connection.

• Sash drops after installation: The balance may not be tensioned correctly, or the shoe may not be locked.
• Sash feels uneven: One side may be tensioned differently than the other.
• Shoe will not lock: Check the cam position and make sure the shoe is seated correctly in the jamb.
• Sash will not tilt back in: Confirm that the pivot bars are fully seated in the pivot shoes.
• Spring slips out of place: Recheck the spring connection and balance cover alignment.
