Step 1: Measure and Confirm the Correct Balance

Start by measuring the height and width of the window opening where the balance will be installed. Record these measurements for reference.

Confirm that the Caldwell roller-tilt constant force balance matches the weight and dimensions of your window sash. The correct balance is important for smooth operation and proper sash support.

Wear safety glasses before beginning the removal or installation process.

Step 2: Remove the Window Sash

To access the balance, you will usually need to remove the window sash. Most tilt sashes can be removed by tilting the sash inward and lifting it out of the frame.

Use caution when removing the sash, especially on larger windows. Some sashes can be heavy or awkward to handle.

Step 3: Access and Remove the Existing Balance

In some cases, there may already be an existing balance or balance pocket inside the window frame. Locate the balance and remove any coverings or trim that may be concealing the jamb pocket.

If an old or damaged balance is in place, carefully remove it using a screwdriver or pliers.

Step 4: Position the New Balance

Slide the new Caldwell roller-tilt constant force balance into the jamb pocket and place it in the correct mounting location.

Make sure the balance is positioned correctly in the pocket before fastening it. The bracket should sit cleanly against the jamb and align with the mounting area.

Do not fully tighten hardware until you have confirmed the balance is properly seated and aligned.

Step 5: Secure the Balance

Secure the balance in place using the bracket and screws. Check that the balance is level and securely fastened before reinstalling the sash.

A balance that is not level or properly secured may affect how the sash moves once it is reinstalled.

Step 6: Reinstall the Sash

If the sash was removed, reinstall it by aligning the sash with the balance and placing the pivot bars back into the coil balance.

Carefully push the sash down slightly to make sure the window is level, then push the sash back into the jamb.

Once the sash is seated, gently raise and lower it to begin checking the balance operation.

Step 7: Test the Window Operation

Gently raise and lower the window sash several times to confirm that the sash moves smoothly and that the balance is operating properly.

Double-check that the balance is securely installed and that the sash stays supported during operation.

If you removed any trim or coverings to access the balance, replace them securely once the window is operating correctly.

Your Caldwell roller-tilt constant force balance should now be installed, and the window should operate smoothly. If the sash does not move correctly, does not stay supported, or feels uneven, recheck the installation before continuing use.
