How to Measure Window Tilt Latches
Window tilt latches are installed near the upper corners of a tilt-window sash. Their projecting noses engage the jamb and hold the sash securely in the upright position until both latches are retracted.
Tilt latches that look similar may differ in housing size, mounting-hole spacing, thickness, nose length, handing, and installation style. Recording the complete set of measurements helps narrow down a compatible replacement.
This guide focuses primarily on surface-mounted and slide-in tilt latches. Fully internal latches are concealed inside the sash and may require additional information about the window manufacturer and sash design.
Before You Start
Tools and information you may need:
- Digital caliper, ruler, or tape measure
- Original left- and right-hand tilt latches
- Small screwdriver, when required for removal
- Paper or notes app for recording dimensions
- Phone or camera for reference photos
- Any visible part numbers, logos, or molded markings
- Photos showing the latch while still installed
Important: Keep the original latches until the replacements have been installed and tested. Do not identify a replacement using overall length alone.
The replacement must fit the sash, align with the original mounting method, and extend far enough for the latch nose to engage the jamb correctly.
Identify the Tilt Latch Style
Begin by looking at how the latch is attached to the top rail of the sash.

The complete latch sits on top of the sash rail and is normally secured with one or two visible screws.
Slide-In
The housing slides into a track or pocket along the top rail. Visible mounting screws may not be used.
Internal
Most of the mechanism is concealed inside the sash. These designs are often manufacturer- or sash-specific.
Removal note: Many slide-in latches can be moved out of the sash track after a stop, cap, or retaining feature is removed. Do not force the housing if it does not slide freely.
Measuring a Surface-Mounted Tilt Latch
Step 1: Measure the Housing Length and Width
Measure only the rectangular latch housing. Do not include the projecting nose or tip in the housing-length measurement.
Measure the housing from one end of the rectangular body to the other, excluding the nose.
Measure across the widest portion of the latch housing.
Record:
- Housing length without the nose
- Housing width
- Overall thickness or height, when relevant
- Button or actuator position
- Housing shape and corner profile
Step 2: Measure the Mounting-Hole Spacing
Mounting-hole spacing is one of the most important measurements for a surface-mounted tilt latch. It determines whether the replacement will align with the existing holes in the sash.


How to measure: Measure from the center of the first mounting hole to the center of the second mounting hole. Do not measure from the outer edges of the holes.
The example latch shown has a center-to-center mounting-hole dimension of approximately 2-7/16 inches.
Also record:
- The number of mounting holes
- The location of the holes within the housing
- The approximate hole diameter
- The original screw-head style
- Any countersunk or raised mounting surfaces
Measuring a Slide-In Tilt Latch
Step 3: Measure the Slide-In Housing
As with a surface-mounted latch, measure the slide-in housing without including the nose. Because the housing must fit inside a track or sash pocket, its complete profile is especially important.
Measure the body length without including the projecting nose.
Measure across the widest portion of the slide-in housing.
Document the complete housing profile, including:
- Housing length
- Housing width
- Raised guides or rails
- Retaining tabs or stops
- Spring location
- Button or actuator shape
- Openings, slots, and molded features
Step 4: Measure the Slide-In Latch Thickness
Thickness is especially important for slide-in latches because the housing must fit inside the sash track or pocket without binding.
- Turn the latch on its side.
- Measure across the thickest part of the main housing.
- Record any raised guides or tabs separately.
- Photograph the side profile clearly.
A latch that is too thick may not enter the track, while one that is too thin may move excessively or fail to remain properly positioned.
Step 5: Measure the Latch Nose
The projecting nose or tip must extend far enough to engage the jamb and hold the sash upright.

Measure from the end of the housing to the farthest point of the nose while the latch is fully extended.

Also compare:
- Nose length
- Nose height and thickness
- Flat, angled, tapered, or stepped shape
- Upper or lower offset from the housing
- Direction in which the nose points
Step 6: Determine the Handing and Orientation
Many tilt latches are supplied as matching left- and right-hand parts. Do not assume that one latch can be installed on either side.
Record:
- Which latch came from the left side of the sash
- Which latch came from the right side
- The direction each nose points
- The location of the button or actuator
- The interior and exterior orientation of the sash
- Whether the design is handed or reversible
Record Additional Identification Details
Two tilt latches may share the same general dimensions while differing in smaller features that affect fit or operation.
Document:
- Latch color
- Plastic, metal, or mixed construction
- Button shape and travel
- Spring position and style
- Housing ribs, rails, tabs, and slots
- Mounting-hole shape and location
- Any numbers, logos, letters, or molded markings
- The manufacturer of the window, when known
- The approximate age of the window
What to Photograph for Identification
Clear photos can help distinguish between latches that look similar in a product listing.
Include photos of:
- The front of both latches
- The back of both latches
- The complete side profile
- The nose from above and from the side
- The mounting holes or slide-in track features
- Any markings or manufacturer logos
- The latch beside a ruler or caliper
- The top rail of the sash before removal
- The jamb area where the nose engages
- The complete window from the interior
Common Measuring Mistakes
- Including the latch nose in the housing-length measurement
- Measuring only the overall length
- Measuring mounting holes from edge to edge
- Ignoring slide-in housing thickness
- Failing to record the housing side profile
- Assuming left- and right-hand latches are identical

- Failing to photograph the back of the latch
- Discarding the original before testing the replacement
- Forcing a slide-in latch out of the sash track
