These instructions are intended for 96 Series screw-in constant force balance assemblies. The same general process can apply to single, tandem, or triple screw-in constant force balance configurations, depending on the window application.

Before You Start

Make sure you have the correct balance components for your window, including the coil spring, balance cover, balance drum, pivot lock shoe, screw, and any required hardware.

Before assembly, compare each replacement component with the original hardware removed from the window. Pay close attention to the coil size, pivot lock shoe style, drum placement, cover type, and how the parts connect together.

Keeping the parts laid out in order can make the assembly process easier and help prevent mixing up components during installation.

Step 1: Line Up the Coil with the Pivot Lock Shoe

Line up the coil, or multiple coils depending on the application, with the screw hole on the side of the pivot lock shoe.

The coil should sit close enough to the shoe for the screw to pass cleanly through the aligned holes. If the coil does not line up naturally, gently adjust it until the holes are aligned.

You may need to gently bend the coil outward so it stays aligned with the screw hole during assembly.

Step 2: Insert the Screw

Once the coil holes are lined up with the hole on the pivot lock shoe, insert the screw through the aligned holes to hold the coil in place.

Make sure the screw passes through the coil and into the shoe evenly. This connection helps keep the coil positioned correctly before the balance drum and cover are added.

Avoid overtightening during the initial setup. The goal is to secure the coil while keeping the assembly properly aligned.

Step 3: Place the Balance Drum on the Cover

Place the balance drum over the center post of the balance cover.

The drum should sit on the post securely so the coil can wrap around it in the next step. Check that the drum and cover are facing the correct direction before continuing.

These two views show the drum being positioned and then seated on the cover post. Once it is in place, you can move on to wrapping the coil around the drum.

Step 4: Wrap the Coil Around the Balance Drum

Slip the coil around the balance drum to hold the balance cover in place.

The coil should sit around the drum without twisting or pulling out of alignment. Check that the cover, drum, coil, and pivot lock shoe remain properly positioned before moving on to installation.

Step 5: Reinstall the Balance and Set the Cam

After placing the balance back into its original slot in the window, insert a flathead screwdriver into the metal cam. Pull the cam down approximately 6 to 8 inches, then turn the metal cam to lock it in place.

This helps position the pivot lock shoe so the sash can be reinstalled into the cams. Take your time and keep control of the shoe while setting the cam.

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for both balances on both sides of the window before reinstalling the sash.

Step 6: Reinstall the Sash

Hold the sash at an angle toward you. Maneuver the left and right sides one at a time so the pivot bars fit back into the cams of the pivot lock shoes.

Make sure the sash is level before tilting it inward and snapping it back into place. Once the sash is secure, gently lower and close the window.

Step 7: Test the Balance Operation

Carefully test the balances by slowly raising and lowering the sash a few times. The sash should move smoothly and stay supported during operation.

If the sash feels uneven, does not stay in place, or does not move smoothly, stop and recheck that both balances are installed correctly and that the pivot bars are properly seated in the cams.

Once the window operates correctly, close and lock the sash.
